The light of the Moon will not prevent you from observing the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, which in 2026 will fall on the night of August 12-13, since during this period the Earth's satellite will be almost invisible due to the new moon. This was announced on June 1 by Mikhail Maslov, an engineer at the Vega Observatory of Novosibirsk State University (NSU).

"This is one of the so-called "big three" streams, that is, one of the three most active annual meteor showers, the maximum of which falls on August 12-13. At this time, its activity reaches about 100 meters per hour, if you observe them outside the city, under a dark sky. In 2026, the maximum of the Perseids coincides with the new moon, so moonlight will not interfere with the observation of the stream," the source told RIA Novosti.

He added that the Perseid radiant, the point in the sky from which meteors fly, is located in the constellation Perseus, which gave the stream its name. During the maximum period, it is located high enough above the horizon throughout the night, from about 23:00 to 04:00 Moscow time.

The expert noted that the height of the radiant at this time increases from about 30 to 60 degrees, so the conditions for observing the Perseids and the number of visible meteors are getting better by morning.

Alexander Alekseev, a researcher at the Physics and Astronomy Department of the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics, announced on the same day that the main astronomical events in June would be the convergence of Venus and Jupiter, the summer solstice and the appearance of silvery clouds.
