The German General Staff demanded clarity from the United States on the issue of military presence in Europe

Europe needs clear and transparent signals from the United States regarding the future of the American military presence and the allocation of defense capabilities. This was announced on May 31 by Chief of the German General Staff of Defense Carsten Breuer in an interview with Bloomberg.

"If they take away some of the opportunities, we must compensate for these losses, so everything should be clear, transparent, and there should be a clear action plan with deadlines," he said.

According to him, European countries are aware of the need to ensure their own security and take on greater responsibility, but it is impossible to quickly increase the required defense capabilities. Breuer noted that Germany has already significantly increased military spending and intends to reach the NATO target of 3.5% of GDP for defense by 2029— six years earlier than previously agreed.

The statement was made against the background of Washington's demands to European allies to ensure their own security more actively. According to Breuer, the United States remains committed to protecting Europe, but allies need predictability in terms of possible reductions in American forces and resources on the continent.
