- The Israeli Defense Minister announced the capture of the Crusader fortress in southern Lebanon
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) captured the medieval Beaufort fortress in southern Lebanon. This was announced on May 31 by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz.
"On the instructions of the Prime Minister [of Israel Benjamin] Netanyahu and on my instructions, the IDF expanded its maneuver in Lebanon, crossed the Litani River and captured the Beaufort Ridge, one of the most important strategic points," he wrote on his page on the social network X (former. Twitter).
Katz added that the IDF will continue to fight Hezbollah to protect northern Israel. He stressed that the symbolism of the capture of the Beaufort fortress is also given by the fact that 44 years ago it was captured as part of the Israeli military operation Peace in Galilee.
On May 30, the IDF press service reported that Israeli troops had destroyed the Hezbollah artillery command in southern Lebanon. According to the publication, a secondary explosion occurred after the impact, which allegedly indicates the presence of weapons inside the building. It is noted that the attack on the headquarters occurred due to the presence of Hezbollah members in the area.
On May 29, the Reuters news agency, citing the UN Children's Fund, reported that an average of 11 children per day were killed as a result of Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon this week. It is clarified that the IDF launched massive strikes on towns and villages in southern Lebanon after Israel declared a new section of this territory a "war zone."
