The expert pointed out the relevance of UN peacekeeping missions
Against the background of instability in Africa and other hot spots, the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions continue to remain relevant. This was announced on May 31 by the president of the interregional public organization of veterans of UN peacekeeping missions, Yuri Vidakas.
"There have been and will be conflicts. And so far, the international community has not come up with any other recipes for conflict resolution. Peacekeeping operations remain in demand, especially against the background of instability in Africa and other regions," he told RIA Novosti.
Vidakas noted that the success of the peacekeeping mission is largely determined by the officers' ability to establish contact with the local population. He emphasized that the UN missions have now become multicomponent. They include a humanitarian component and the protection of the civilian population.
On May 30, Vidakas said that Russian specialists, thanks to their professional training and accumulated experience, continue to enjoy great respect in international peacekeeping structures. The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is celebrated annually on May 29. The memorable date was established by the General Assembly of the world organization on December 11, 2002.
