The rich countries — the allies of the United States - will now pay for their own defense, rather than relying on American subsidies. This was announced on May 30 by the head of the Pentagon, Pitt Hegseth, during a speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue International Security Forum in Singapore.

"The era when the United States subsidized the defense of rich countries is over. We need partners, not protectorates. We need alliances based on shared responsibility, not dependence," Hegseth said.
