Putin explained the reason for Schroeder's election as Russia's preferred negotiator.
Russian President Vladimir Putin explained on May 29 that by naming former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as the Russian candidate for the role of negotiator from the European Union (EU), he meant that he could be trusted.
"When I mentioned Mr. Schroeder's last name, I meant that he is a person who can be trusted. Do you understand?" he told reporters after his official visit to Kazakhstan.
Putin added that labels are now being placed on the person he indicated.
The Russian President nominated Schroeder as the preferred negotiator from Europe for contacts with Moscow back on May 9. This proposal, however, was, according to Deutschlandfunk radio station, rejected by the current German authorities.
Later, the involvement of the politician designated by Putin was completely ruled out by the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas. Instead of Schroeder, she offered herself, which was criticized in the European Union (EU).
On May 29, the Russian leader, answering a question from Izvestia, clarified that the negotiator from this association should really be chosen by his representatives themselves, since they do it for themselves.
