VTSIOM expert named promising specialties in the era of AI
The labor market in Russia is on the verge of drastic changes. This forecast was announced to Izvestia on May 31 by Alexander Odintsovo, a leading analyst of the Youth and Education practice at the VTsIOM analytical center. The usual career strategies for students are losing relevance under the pressure of technology and demography, he noted.
The expert called the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), which directly threatens the demand for a whole stratum of workers, a key challenge of the next decade.
"Artificial intelligence will hit the staffing needs in IT itself. "Ordinary coders" are less and less needed in the field of information technology," the source said, predicting the "extinction" of entry—level specialists in this industry.
Against this background, as the analyst emphasized, the struggle for any qualified positions will intensify. According to Rosstat forecasts, by 2035, the number of 18-year-olds will grow to almost 1.9 million people. This will inevitably lead to higher competition among young professionals than ever before. In order to survive in the new conditions, it is necessary to increase competitive advantages even during studies, making a choice between gaining practical experience and deepening theoretical knowledge, the VTsIOM expert is convinced.
Existence in the new economy, in his opinion, will provide only an interdisciplinary approach. Success awaits not just IT specialists, but data architects and highly specialized specialists at the junction of industries capable of applying AI in the real sector — from agriculture to industrial production. Therefore, today's applicants should look for universities offering training programs for such hybrid specialists, combining a powerful mathematical base with applied skills.
