The Kremlin has released a statement by Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan on Armenia.

On May 29, the Kremlin's press service published a joint statement by the presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan on the situation around Armenia, which has announced its intention to join the European Union (EU). The heads of four states called for holding a national referendum in the republic, which should determine the country's future foreign policy course. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

Joint Statement by the Heads of the four EAEU Member States

At a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana, the leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan adopted a joint statement on Armenia, Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said. Later, the Kremlin released the text of the document. The statement was signed by the Presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, Vladimir Putin, Alexander Lukashenko, Sadyr Japarov and Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

"We share the position on the need to hold a national referendum in the Republic of Armenia as soon as possible on joining the European Union or remaining in the Eurasian Economic Union," the joint statement says.

The reason for this position was Yerevan's preparation for joining the EU, which, as noted, poses risks to the economic security of the EAEU states and may harm the countries of the union. The statement also emphasizes that at the next summit of the association in December 2026, members of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council will have to report to the leaders of the states on the possible consequences of the suspension of the EAEU Treaty with respect to Armenia.

According to Ushakov, the text of the document will be delivered to Yerevan by Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, who replaced Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the Eurasian Economic Forum in Astana.
