The orthopedist named the causes of burning in the feet
Burning and discomfort in the feet can occur not only due to fatigue after a working day or physical exertion, but also against the background of flat feet, plantar fasciitis, varicose veins and fungal diseases. Mikhail Ignatov, an orthopedic traumatologist at the First professional network of orthotic salons, told Izvestia on June 4.
According to the specialist, by the evening, the feet may hurt and "burn" due to flat feet. With this pathology, the arches of the feet change position, which causes the load on the legs and the musculoskeletal system to be distributed incorrectly. This disrupts the functioning of bones, muscles, and ligaments and can affect nerve endings.
As a result, a person experiences numbness, tingling, burning, and a feeling of "goosebumps." These symptoms usually resolve after rest or sleep. Orthopedic insoles and shoes that support the foot in the correct position and reduce the load help to alleviate the condition.
"Another common cause of burning in the soles is plantar fasciitis. In this pathology, the fascia becomes inflamed — a large ligament running along the foot from the heel to the toes. Excessive exercise can damage it, leading to inflammation. Plantar fasciitis is accompanied by stabbing pain in the sole area, swelling and a burning sensation," Ignatov said.
Individual orthopedic insoles and shoes that support the arches of the foot and reduce tension on the plantar fascia can be used to reduce symptoms. Drug injections, shock wave therapy, and kinesiotaping of the calcaneal region with support of the plantar fascia are also used.
A burning sensation and a feeling of swelling in the feet can also be caused by varicose veins. Through the veins, blood returns to the heart from the bottom up, overcoming the force of gravity. Valves that work together with muscle contractions are responsible for this process. This mechanism is called the musculovenous pump of the lower leg.
If the valves do not work efficiently enough and do not close completely, a reverse blood flow occurs, the pressure in the vessels increases, and their walls expand. This can lead to swelling, including in the foot area, pain, heaviness, fatigue, and burning in the legs. Compression knitwear helps to support the work of the musculoskeletal pump, which reduces pain and swelling.
"Mycoses, fungal diseases, can also be the cause of burning. Unsuitable shoes and insoles with poor air and moisture exchange contribute to overheating and sweating of the feet, creating an environment for fungi and bacteria. Therefore, it is better to choose shoes made of natural materials, and the insoles are removable to make them easier to care for," said the orthopedist.
In February, Medical Xpress magazine warned about the risks of high-heeled shoes for joints. Scientists have learned that supportive shoes have different effects on joints in osteoarthritis. The study found that stable supportive shoes reduced pain when walking by an average of 63% more effectively than soft flexible models.
