- ESPN announced Washington's willingness to give Ovechkin time to decide on a contract.
The leadership of the National Hockey League (NHL) club The Washington Capitals are ready to provide Russian striker Alexander Ovechkin with the necessary time to make a decision on continuing his career. This was reported by ESPN on May 29.
According to the channel, representatives of the team and the 40-year-old athlete remain in constant contact and discuss the details of further cooperation.
"Communication between Ovechkin and the club remains open as both sides continue to work through key issues. In particular, they are discussing what the role of a hockey player will look like next season after the invitation of the majority coach Ray Bennett," the article says.
Several scenarios are being considered: the striker may re-sign a contract with an American club or return to Dynamo Moscow, where he began his professional career and played from 2001 to 2005.
In the 2025/26 National Hockey League regular season, 40-year-old Alexander Ovechkin took part in all 82 matches, scoring 64 points — exactly 32 goals and 32 assists, adds "Газета.Ru ".
Brian McLellan, Washington's president of hockey operations, said on April 20 that Ovechkin has a tremendous impact on the team. The current agreement of the 40-year-old hockey player with Washington is calculated until the end of the 2025/26 season. Ovechkin himself had previously announced that he would decide on the future of his career in the summer.
Chris Patrick, general manager of HC Washington Capitals, said on April 20 that the club would give Ovechkin time to decide on a contract extension and stressed that they would support him in any case.
