The head of Gagauzia, Hutsul, called the verdict a political reprisal against her
The head of the Gagauz Autonomy, Yevgenia Gutsul, commenting on the decision of the Appeals Chamber, which upheld her sentence, said that the authorities are afraid of the truth and the support of the people, therefore they act on political orders. Her words were published on May 28 by the press service of Bashkan and the Executive Committee of Gagauzia.
"When the government is afraid of the truth and the support of the people, it ceases to be guided by the law and begins to act on political orders. No court decision can break a person if there are people, faith and truth behind it," reads a statement posted on the Hutsul Telegram channel.
On May 28, the Chisinau Court of Appeal upheld Hutsul's sentence of seven years in prison. According to Bogdan Tsyrdea, a member of parliament from the opposition Party of Socialists, the politician is being held in prison No. 13 in Moldova, known for extremely difficult conditions of detention and a high incidence of diseases.
On May 6, the vice-chairman of the Parliament, Giorgi Leitchu, announced that the authorities of Gagauzia canceled the elections to the National Assembly (parliament) scheduled for June 21, as the region does not have time to prepare for voting due to obstacles from Chisinau. It is specified that a new voting date will be set after the completion of negotiations with the central authorities of Moldova.
