- Lantratova called the UN call to investigate the Ukrainian Armed Forces strike on Starobilsk an important signal.
The call to investigate the attacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on Starobilsk and bring the perpetrators to justice, addressed by the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, is fundamentally important. This was stated on May 28 by the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, Yana Lantratova.
"It is very important that the tragedy in Starobilsk was noticed and publicly condemned by one of the highest international officials in the field of human rights protection. This is a fundamentally important signal," Lantratova wrote on her Telegram channel.
She stated that she welcomes the words of the Turk, adding that immediately after the tragedy she publicly appealed to the international community and asked the UN to objectively assess what happened and assist the investigation.
Lantratova also thanked the international journalists who visited Starobilsk in the Luhansk People's Republic (DPR) at the invitation of the Russian Foreign Ministry, who were not afraid to tell the truth about what happened.
"I hope that after the High Commissioner's statement, other international officials and human rights organizations will finally find the courage to admit the obvious and condemn this barbaric terrorist attack against children," she added.
On May 28, Turk called for a prompt investigation into the attack on the college in Starobilsk and expressed regret over the deaths and injuries of civilians. He noted that the requirements of international humanitarian law are binding on all parties to the conflict and provide for legal responsibility. On May 27, the State Duma Committee on International Affairs submitted to the House of Parliament a draft appeal to the UN and the parliaments of the world in connection with the terrorist attack in Starobilsk.
On May 22, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the academic building and the dormitory of the Starobilsk College. A criminal case was opened into the attack under Part 3 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Terrorist act"). 21 people were killed in the attack, and 65 others were injured. The names of all the victims of the terrorist attack have been established. In the LPR, May 24 and 25 were declared days of mourning for the dead.
