Russia regards Japan's provision of its territory for the deployment of US Typhon missile systems for the duration of military exercises as a step that threatens Russia's Far Eastern borders. This was stated on May 28 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, at a briefing.

"We consider providing Japan's territory for the deployment of American intermediate—range and shorter-range missile systems, regardless of whether this is done on an episodic, rotational or permanent basis, as a step that has a serious negative impact on the stability and security of the Asia-Pacific region and poses a direct threat to our Far Eastern borders," she said.

The Typhon missile system is the latest American medium-range mobile ground-based system developed for the US Army by Lockheed Martin based on Mk 41 shipboard vertical launch systems. The complex is adapted for firing two types of naval missiles: Tomahawk for hitting ground targets at distances up to 1800 km and Standard SM-6 surface-to-surface class with a range of about 460-500 km. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced on January 20 that Typhon is still located in Japan. He stressed that the deployment of Typhon mobile batteries at the Japanese base in September 2025 and plans to deploy missiles on the island pose a threat to regional stability.
