The European Commissioner called Ukraine's demand to join the EU in 2027 impossible.
Ukraine will not be able to join the European Union (EU) in 2027, despite the relevant requirement on its part, as some conditions for this are not fulfilled. This was stated by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos in an interview with the British newspaper Financial Times (FT).
The interlocutor of the publication clarified that the condition for the entry of the Ukrainian state into the community by the specified date is "impossible," although the process of "artificially approaching" the applications of Ukraine and Moldova may still contribute to the start of a corresponding dialogue this summer.
"The EU must change the accession system to meet Ukraine's interests. The first cluster of negotiations may start as early as June," the article says.
It is explained that the process of discussing the admission of new members to the EU is aimed at fully synchronizing the legislation of the candidate country with European standards. Such negotiations often last more than 10 years, while there is no clear time frame for completing this procedure.
On May 21, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz offered Kiev the status of an "associate member" of the European Union, which would mark an intermediate stage before fully joining the community. However, this proposal was not accepted by the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, who considered it "unfair."
On the same day, the German Chancellor sent a letter to the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen, where he called the effective completion of potential future negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU unrealistic.
