- An investigation has been launched in the United States against Trump's accuser Elizabeth Carroll.
The US Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into journalist and writer Elizabeth Jean Carroll, who accused American leader Donald Trump of sexual harassment. This was reported on May 28 by CNN News channel, citing a source.
According to the newspaper, the investigation is aimed at clarifying the truthfulness of Carroll's testimony, which she gave during the trial of her two lawsuits against Trump. It is clarified that the US president lost both cases. He was obliged to pay the writer $ 5 million in 2023, and in January 2024 — $ 83.3 million.
The publication notes that the new investigation by the Ministry of Justice is based on Carroll's testimony from 2022. Then she stated that she had not received outside financial assistance to file a lawsuit, but later it became clear the involvement of billionaire Reed Hoffman, who paid part of her legal expenses.
In May 2023, a court in New York found Trump guilty in a civil lawsuit filed by Carroll, who accused him of harassment and defamation. At the same time, the jury concluded that the politician did not commit the rape of which he was initially accused.
In January 2024, a jury in New York ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million to Carroll. The total amount was eight times higher than what the woman had requested in her initial claim.
In 2019, Carroll published a book in which she claimed that in late 1995 or early 1996, Trump raped her in the fitting room of a store in downtown New York. Then she filed a corresponding lawsuit in court, but the case did not get a move. In November last year, the American filed a new lawsuit. Trump has repeatedly denied the accusations against him, saying that he had never met with Carroll.
