The German authorities have increased investments in state-owned companies by almost 54 times to prepare infrastructure for a possible military conflict in Europe. This became known on May 28 from the data of the federal budget of the country.

We are talking about the section "Inspection and expansion of public transport facilities and infrastructure of military interest." 161 million euros have been allocated for subsidies to state-owned enterprises for the 2026 financial year, while only 3 million euros were allocated in the budget for the previous year for the same item, RIA Novosti reports.

The document also authorizes the German Ministry of Defense to conclude long-term contracts worth €1.2 billion. These obligations will be paid gradually: 200 million euros in 2027 and 250 million euros annually until 2031. The bulk of the funds will be used to expand the territory of the port of Bremerhaven, which could become a major NATO logistics hub in Europe.

In addition, Germany has increased the cost of adapting highways and bridges for the transfer of military equipment by an average of four times — up to €36.5 million — compared with the plan for 2025.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on May 12 that the member countries of the alliance should increase the volume of the defense industry in order to implement a policy of deterrence. He stressed that neither the European nor the American defense industrial complexes are yet able to produce enough weapons to cover the needs of Brussels and Washington.

German politician Sarah Wagenknecht said on April 29 that Germany's draft budget for 2027 is a devastating blow to the country's future. According to her, the financial plan provides for the largest arms buildup since 1945 and is accompanied by an "unabashed" increase in debt obligations. She pointed out that the volume of new borrowings will amount to 200 billion euros, while the funds are almost entirely directed to the purchase of weapons and the "total militarization" of Germany.
