On May 28, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the personnel, civilian personnel and veterans of the border guard service of the FSB of the Russian Federation on the occasion of a professional holiday — Border Guard Day.

The President noted the rich history of the Russian border guard service.

"Throughout the history of our Fatherland, defenders of the borders of the motherland have defended the interests of the state, faithfully and faithfully served the motherland and our people. From time immemorial, the soldiers of the outposts and cordons were the first to repel the enemy, fought for their native land, not sparing their lives," he said.

Separately, the President noted the importance of the border guard service during the Great Patriotic War. In the first hours of the conflict, they were the ones who were able to delay the enemy's advance, which made it possible to disrupt the plans of the German command.

"The courage and steadfastness of the border guards who fought the Nazis 85 years ago, in June 1941, and with their dedication delayed the enemy's advance, will forever remain in our grateful memory. Already in the first hours, days and weeks of fighting, we made a huge contribution to disrupting the plans of the German command," Putin recalled.

Later, in the post-war period, the Green Berets took part in the destruction of Nazi collaborators and the nationalist underground, and reacted to attempts to illegally cross the state border. They also demonstrated military valor in fulfilling their international duty in Afghanistan, and solved important tasks in the fight against international terrorism.

The border guard service continues to be important and significant at the present time, including in the area of the special military operation.

"And nowadays, during a special military operation, you actually prove your professionalism. In the most difficult, unusual situations, you act fearlessly and decisively. We bow our heads before the memory of our comrades—in-arms who died bravely, but did not leave their posts, and remained faithful to their military duty and the Fatherland to the end," Putin added.

He noted that currently the border guard service of the FSB of Russia is a reliable link in ensuring the security of the country and citizens. The Russian leadership will continue to do everything necessary to improve the border infrastructure and comprehensively strengthen the human resources and equipment of such units.

"I once again congratulate you on the Day of the Border Guard and wish you new successes in your service. The kindest words to your family and friends," the President concluded.

On April 13, the Federal Security Service (FSB) proposed to expand border control in the area of critical facilities on the approaches to the ports of the Leningrad Region. The ministry explained that the innovations will make it possible to take control of small vessels near the port infrastructure and strategically important facilities on the approaches to the harbors of the Leningrad region. In addition, traffic control over ice crossings in the Anadyr Estuary and the Gulf of Corfu will be strengthened during the winter and spring period.
