The decision of the Riga authorities to deprive Deputy Alexei Roslikov of his mandate is "politically motivated." Yulia Sokhina, a deputy of the Riga City Council, told Izvestia about this on May 27.

She explained that Roslikov was trying to connect to one of the meetings remotely because he was away. However, when it became clear that the deputy was trying to connect from Belarus, which Latvia considers unfriendly, his account was blocked, and the authorities announced that a hacker attack was being conducted on his behalf.

"At first, during this meeting, it was about a cyberattack, an attempt to log in from an unfriendly side, an attempt to connect. But then everything, as it usually happens in such cases, came down to the fact that they openly said that this was a political decision," Sokhina stressed.

She also called this case a precedent and suggested that the Latvian authorities could use similar schemes again "with inconvenient politicians."

"By and large, <...> this is a precedent — what has now happened with Roslikov. And, as they say, the way is paved. And you can use, plus or minus, such a scheme with other inconvenient policies," Sokhina said.

On May 21, the Riga City Council stripped Roslikov of his deputy mandate. The reasons for the withdrawal of the mandate were the support of Russia and Belarus, as well as the presence on their territory, which allegedly poses a threat to Latvia's national security.

In April, it was reported that Roslikov could be stripped of his mandate. According to Roslikov, for his opponents, the very fact that a politician who supports Russia and Belarus is in the legislative bodies is an insult that they cannot bear.

Last September, the Latvian police detained Roslikov, who spoke out in defense of the Russian-speaking population. On August 21, 2025, Roslikov stated that citizens in Latvia were being massively insulted for comments in Russian on social networks. He clarified that the country's law enforcement agencies do not interfere in the situation.
