About 45 million people may be at risk of starvation as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. This was announced on May 26 by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

"I have reported on the alarming food crisis caused by the illegal war in the Middle East. Up to 45 million people may face acute hunger if we do nothing, if the situation continues in its current form," he said at a press conference.

According to Sanchez, the world is now spending a lot of money on weapons, while reducing the cost of fighting hunger and disease. He stressed that Spain would not be able to cope with such problems alone.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Program (FAO) said on May 20 that the restriction of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a global food crisis within six months if governments around the world do not take prompt action.

The La Tribune newspaper on May 15 suggested that Europe could face a shortage of medicines due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz amid the escalation of the situation around Iran. According to the publication, the supply of components for the pharmaceutical industry depends on China and India for 80%.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on May 13 that US policy was leading Europe into a deep energy and food crisis. The diplomat noted that Europe could be one of the most affected parties in the event of a prolonged crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
