The Russian Foreign Ministry pointed to the lack of progress in resolving the conflict in Transnistria.

The discussion of the potential withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria requires progress in resolving the current conflict, which is still far away. This was announced on May 27 by the Director of the Second Department of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Russian Foreign Ministry Alexey Polishchuk.

"The Russian military performs two functions in Transnistria — peacekeeping and the protection of ammunition depots that have existed there since Soviet times," he told RIA Novosti.

Polishchuk commented on the statement made by the head of the European Diplomacy, Kai Kallas, during his visit to Chisinau, that the issue of the withdrawal of the Russian military from the territory of Transnistria should also be considered as part of the negotiations on Ukraine.

According to the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, "in order to put into practice the issue of the withdrawal of Russian troops, it is necessary to advance the process of the Transnistrian settlement that is in place." That, he noted, is "still a long way off."

On May 16, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) expressed gratitude to the Russian leadership in connection with the signing on May 15 of a decree by Russian President Vladimir Putin making it easier for residents of the PMR to obtain Russian citizenship. They noted that the decree will strengthen the security and social protection of Pridnestrovian citizens in the conditions of continuing regional instability.
