EU extends sanctions against Russia for a year

The European Union has extended sanctions against Russia for a year, until May 28, 2027. This follows from the message of the EU Council, published on May 26 on the organization's website.

"On May 27, 2024, the EU decided to impose a sanctions regime. <...> The duration of the sanctions regime was last extended until May 28, 2027," the publication says.

It is noted that currently 72 people and one organization are under these sanctions. These include travel bans for individuals, asset freezes for individuals and organizations, as well as a ban on providing funds or economic resources to these individuals.

On the same day, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU countries had begun to develop a 21st package of sanctions against Russia. According to her, Brussels also approved financing for Ukraine for €90 billion, which should help Kiev negotiate "from a position of strength."
