Europe's key problem is that it does not know what to talk about with Russia in potential negotiations. This was stated by political scientist Ivan Mezyuho on Tuesday, May 26.

He stressed that the Europeans reject not only Russia's peace initiatives, but also those of US President Donald Trump.

Earlier in the day, Politico newspaper wrote that former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, European Council President Antonio Costa and former Finnish President Sauli Niinisto could become mediators from the European Union (EU) in potential negotiations with Russia to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.

"They do not offer any alternative that would take into account the position on the ground and the realities associated with the current military confrontation," Mezyuho said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

According to the political scientist, the issue is not only about personal negotiators, but also about the topic of these negotiations.

"What is Europe going to talk about with the Russian Federation in principle, given that today the UK, together with the leading countries of the European Union, is actually pursuing an economic course of 'military Keynesianism,'" Mezyuho stressed.

On May 18, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel refused to mediate during negotiations on Ukraine between Russia and the EU, RT reports. In her opinion, only current heads of state and government can participate in such negotiations, since negotiations with Moscow require intermediaries with real "political power."

Senator Alexey Pushkov said on May 17 that Finnish President Alexander Stubb is afraid that he will be "eaten" at the negotiating table. He also compared Stubb's reasoning to the image of Dr. Lecter from the movie "The Silence of the Lambs." According to him, this character also loved "cannibalistic analogies."

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, named former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as Europe's preferred negotiator for contacts with Moscow.
