Gymnasts of the Russian Federation almost missed the World Cup in Bulgaria due to problems with a charter flight

The Russian gymnastics team almost missed the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Bulgaria after the host country's aviation services refused to arrange a charter flight for the athletes. This was reported on May 26 by RT TV channel.

It is noted that the Russian Gymnastics Federation (FGR) planned to send the team by charter, as there were not enough tickets available for regular flights from Istanbul. After receiving the refusal from the Bulgarian side, the Federation's leadership turned directly to Turkish Airlines.

The carrier met the Russian side halfway and replaced the aircraft on the flight with a larger capacity. Thanks to this, the entire national team was able to fly to Varna. The federation thanked the airline for its assistance.

The European Championship will be held in Bulgaria from 27 to 31 May. For Russian gymnasts, it will be the first major international tournament after the reinstatement of their rights — athletes will have the opportunity to perform under the national flag and anthem. In addition to medals, quotas for the upcoming World Championships will be awarded at the competitions.

On May 18, World Gymnastics allowed Russian athletes to participate in international competitions under its flag and anthem. The decision was made at a meeting of the executive committee in Sharm el-Sheikh. Later, on May 24, it became known that European Gymnastics allowed Russian rhythmic gymnasts to compete under the national flag at the European Championships held in Bulgaria.

The head of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Degtyarev, in turn, after the decision of World Gymnastics, said that it restored the integrity of all gymnastic sports and the Russian national team.
