The expert spoke about the methods of combating myopia in schoolchildren
Roman Krastelev, coordinator of the Moscow branch of the Liberal Democratic Party, in an interview with the agency RuNews24.Ru On Tuesday, May 26, he told me how to deal with myopia.
He stated that one in five elementary school students no longer sees the blackboard from the last desk, and by graduation, myopia is detected in 30-50% of schoolchildren. Experts warn that the problem is growing rapidly and is directly related to gadgets.
According to Krastelev, children are literally "swallowed up" by screens from an early age, and this raises serious concerns — according to doctors, more and more people are at risk of experiencing visual impairment by the age of 30.
We are talking about the so—called "digital myopia" - it develops due to constant focusing at close range. At first, there is a spasm of the eye muscle, which can still be reversed, but over time it can turn into permanent myopia.
Experts draw attention to the fact that children rarely complain themselves, so it is important for parents to monitor the symptoms: squinting, eye fatigue, headaches, too close to the screen or book. It also emphasizes the need for annual checkups with an ophthalmologist, even in the absence of complaints.
The main recommendations include limiting screen time, maintaining distance and lighting, taking regular breaks, and, most importantly, taking at least two hours of daily walks. The expert stressed that the problem cannot be ignored: overloading with gadgets is already affecting children's health, so it is important to reduce the digital load and introduce more breaks for the eyes.
Earlier in May, ophthalmologist Tatiana Shilova told RT that low-quality sunglasses can be potentially harmful to the eyes. The main danger is not related to the darkening of the lenses, but to the lack of full-fledged UV protection.
In April, ophthalmologist Oksana Kuznetsova warned that prolonged screen work, poor lighting and insufficient distance from the monitor increase the risk of vision problems. She added that stress and lack of sleep can also lead to dry eye syndrome, myopia and spasm of accommodation.
In turn, Oksana Redko, an ophthalmologist from childhood, recalled that frequent use of gadgets can cause "sand" in the eyes and worsen vision. She stressed that the screen should be kept at a distance of 30-40 cm to reduce the risk of dryness and myopia, notes 360.ru .
Ophthalmologist Ekaterina Bayandina told Izvestia that myopia can lead to vision loss. Retinal detachment may be the most serious complication in the case of myopia.
At the same time, ophthalmologist Ivan Zarubin told the Moscow City News agency that one of the factors contributing to the development of myopia in children is currently insufficient exposure to daylight. He noted that reading in low light (for example, in the dark from gadgets) can accelerate the development of myopia if you are predisposed to it.
