Almost half of Russians have traveled alone at least once
Almost half of Russians have traveled alone at least once, and 96% of them were satisfied with this experience. Most consider such trips as an opportunity to reboot and be alone with themselves. This was told to Izvestia by analysts from Tiburon and the Ostrov online hotel and apartment booking service, who conducted market research.
Young people aged 25-34, mostly men, predominate among Russians who have experience of solo travel. Interestingly, the format of solo trips is a conscious decision for the majority: only 17% of respondents cited the fact that they had no one to travel with among the reasons for their solo trip. The majority choose this format intentionally: more than a third admit that in this way they want to change the situation, be alone with themselves, and also take a break from their usual surroundings.
Most of those who traveled alone say that they felt complete freedom and independence (45%) or inspiration (38%) during such a trip. Only 9% of the respondents experienced melancholy and loneliness in solo travel.
Russians say that solo travel increases their confidence and self-understanding. For many, such a trip becomes a form of personal reboot (73%) and is equally perceived as a valuable life experience (73%). It is also important for Russians that solo travel has more flexibility in choosing accommodation and route, according to 71% of respondents.
According to Ostrovok, in 2026, the majority of single tourists choose to travel around the country — domestic destinations account for 82% of bookings, while foreign destinations account for 18%. Among the most popular Russian destinations are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod, Vladivostok and Novosibirsk. Abroad, the top ten countries include countries that can be reached without a transfer and where a visa is not required. These are mainly neighboring countries — Belarus, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, resort destinations — Turkey, Thailand. In addition, the top two European destinations are Italy and France, as well as China. When booking accommodation for solo trips in 2026, Russians spend an average of 4,350 rubles per night in hotels and apartments across the country — 3% higher than last year (4,200 rubles). Abroad — 7,200 rubles per night, which is 7% higher than a year earlier (6,700 rubles). While travelers traveling alone or in company tend to choose different types of accommodation, solo tourists are noticeably more likely to prefer hotels. Hotels of different star categories account for more than 70% of all bookings made for one person, while the share of apartments is only 16%. For comparison, tourists who do not travel alone are much more likely to stay in apartments — this category accounts for 44% of bookings, while hotels account for 42%.
On May 22, experts from LEGENDA Hotels informed Izvestia that short domestic trips over the holiday weekend are becoming the new norm for Russian tourists. The "leave for three days" format is gaining popularity: it does not require long-term planning, fits into any budget and gives the feeling of a full-fledged trip. June holidays are one of the most sought—after reasons for such a holiday.
