Auto expert warned about the dangers of using winter tires in summer

Using winter tires in summer is dangerous because they are much softer than summer tires, and they start to overheat at high temperatures. As a result, the car handles worse, becomes less stable in turns, and the braking distance increases noticeably. Tamashi auto expert Konstantin Ozhogin warned about this on May 25.

According to him, the wear of winter tires increases dramatically in warm weather, and due to overheating, the tread is worn out unevenly, the tire loses its properties. Thus, an attempt to save money on timely tire replacement leads to additional costs for the purchase of a new set of tires, the expert noted.

"A separate risk is associated with the behavior of the car in the rain. Many people mistakenly believe that a deep winter tread is better at handling water, but summer tires are designed specifically to work on hot, wet asphalt. Winter tires in such conditions hold the road worse, and the likelihood of aquaplaning increases, especially at high speed," Rossiyskaya Gazeta quotes Ozhogin as saying.

He also noted that operating a car with winter tires in summer increases the load on the suspension and braking system. At the same time, fuel consumption and noise levels in the cabin are increasing. On long-distance trips, in traffic jams and when the car is fully loaded, these problems become especially noticeable, the specialist pointed out.
