Children's tantrums are not always associated with moods or poor parenting. Sometimes emotional outbursts can indicate an overload of the nervous system, attention deficit, or even latent developmental disorders. All the details are in the Izvestia article.

The nature of emotional outbursts

According to Olga Butenko, a pediatric neurologist at the Medin Medical Center, children's hysteria is not always a sign of bad behavior or manipulation. It often indicates that the child's nervous system could not cope with the load. Between the ages of two and four, such reactions are considered part of normal development, when a child learns to face rejection and accept adult rules.

Young children still do not know how to fully manage emotions and explain their condition in words. A child may react by crying or aggression due to hunger, fatigue, fright from noise or a large number of people. Butenko stressed that in such situations it is important for parents to remain calm.

"The main task of an adult is not to defeat a child in a moment of hysteria, but to help him gradually learn to cope with himself. Calmly, consistently, without loss of parental authority," she said.

How to react to parents

According to Maria Todorova, a child and family psychologist, many adults perceive emotional manifestations as pampering, but they are often accompanied by a lack of attention, contact, or a sense of security. Healthy children who have no emotional problems are not satisfied with constant tantrums. Todorova noted that the task of parents is not to suppress emotions, but to teach them to live them safely.

"For this, it is important to remain calm, not to engage in an emotional struggle, not to scream and not immediately try to shut up the tantrum," Todorova said.

It is important not only to remain calm, but also not to overturn the established boundaries at the first cry. If the child gets used to getting what he wants after shouting, this way of behavior will be fixed as the main method of achieving goals.

When should I see a doctor?

Frequent and violent reactions may indicate medical problems. They sometimes hide developmental delays, sleep disorders, anemia, chronic pain, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or autism spectrum disorders.

Experts recommend consulting a doctor if tantrums persist after five to six years or are accompanied by dangerous behavior. The reason for concern should be cases when a child harms himself or others, loses previously acquired skills, suffers from seizures or constant anxiety.

"Hysteria is not always a whim, but it is also not always a disease. This is a reason to take a closer look at your child. That is, the child is testing the boundaries, he is tired, he is overloaded, he does not know how to express himself in words, or there are some features of the development of his nervous system behind this," Butenko concluded.
