Almost 100 thousand sturgeon fry released into the Charu River in Transbaikalia

In the Trans-Baikal Territory, 70 thousand Siberian sturgeon fry were released into the largest tributary of the Lena River, the Charu River. This is the fourth batch of juveniles that was delivered to the northern regions of the region.

The fish was grown from caviar. The process of growing to the required weight of 2 g took place in a specialized fish hatchery in Chita.

The work is carried out as part of a program to restore biological resources, said Governor Alexander Osipov.

ChitaMedia news agency explains that the Siberian sturgeon almost disappeared from the reservoirs of Transbaikalia in the 1990s due to poaching. This species is listed in the Red Book of the region. Scientists and industrial enterprises are working to restore its population. So, since 2023, more than 200 thousand fry have been released into local reservoirs.

The first monitoring of the results of the event will be carried out this summer. Experts will assess whether the juveniles have managed to adapt to their natural environment.
