The Russian language contains more than 4 thousand words beginning with the letter "a". Pavel Katyshev, Head of the Department of General and Russian Linguistics at the Pushkin Institute, announced this on May 24.

"As a result of the calculations, a little more than 4 thousand words with the letter "a" were revealed," he told RIA Novosti.

He clarified that the calculation excluded repetitions of words, stable phrases and individual morphemes.

According to the philologist, the Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian language edited by S.I. Ozhegov and N.Yu. Shvedova (1992) contains more than 1 thousand words with the letter "a", and in the Small Academic Dictionary by A.P. Evgenieva (1984) — more than 1.5 thousand..

The largest number of words for this letter, according to Katyshev, is contained in the Modern Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian language by T.F. Efremova (2000), where there are more than 3 thousand.
