- Residents of Starobilsk created a memorial after the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck the college and dormitory
Residents of Starobilsk in the Luhansk People's Republic (LNR) brought flowers and toys to a spontaneous memorial organized in memory of those who died after the attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on a dormitory and college. Footage from the scene of the May 23 events is published by Izvestia.
In addition, one of the injured students told how the students tried to escape during the night attack. According to the girl, before the stroke, she and her roommates were getting ready for bed. After the drone appeared near the college building, students began to descend to the first floor.
"We just started taking out the mattress, we hear how to get to the ped (pedagogical college. — Ed.) A drone is flying up. At first, he just flew around the building," the victim shared.
After the first blow, the students were covered by a shock wave, bricks and dust rained down on them. The girl ran outside and hid under a bench when she heard the sound of a second drone. Later, together with other students, she tried to get away from the college building engulfed in flames. According to the girl, the students hid under the trees and tried to run to a safe place.
"We ourselves understood that the ped was on fire. We got scared and started climbing over fences. <...> We started climbing over rocks. The boys helped us. <...> Then we went to people in high-rise buildings, ran in, everything was covered in soot and blood. People helped us wash and gave us water," she said.
Later, according to the student, the students started calling the supervisors, asking them to tell their parents and the staff of the Ministry of Emergency Situations about the fire at the college and that there were victims among the students.
On May 22, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the academic building and the dormitory of the Starobilsk College. A criminal case was opened into the attack under Part 3 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Terrorist act"). Rescuers are dismantling the wreckage manually. The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the number of children killed in the attack of Ukrainian drones on the college has increased to 18. Then it was noted that there may be three more people under the rubble.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called a terrorist attack on a college dormitory. He also noted that the attack was not related to the military infrastructure, as there is none in the area. Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik added on May 23 that drones had attacked the collapse site of the dormitory where rescuers were working.
