The Russian Foreign Ministry called the NPT a cornerstone of international security
The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) has been and remains the cornerstone of international security and the non-proliferation regime. This was announced on May 23 by the Russian Foreign Ministry following the results of the 11th NPT Review Conference.
"The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons has been and remains the cornerstone of international security and the nuclear non-proliferation regime. The main thing is that the review of the NPT has taken place," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.
The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the aggression of Israel and the United States against Iran, carried out in 2025-2026, was the most serious obstacle to the implementation of the tasks of the forum. The delegations of the collective West, who arrived in New York to solve their own political problems unrelated to the subject of the NPT, contributed to the formation of an unfavorable atmosphere.
It is noted that the EU countries and NATO members, as well as the Brussels European bureaucracy, prevented an effective dialogue by promoting a destructive agenda focused on criticism of Russia, China, Iran and the DPRK.
The Russian delegation advocated the consolidation of provisions on the inadmissibility of nuclear war and the conditionality of progress in disarmament by the situation in the field of international security, and also defended the right of States to the peaceful use of atomic energy. Due to the harsh attitudes of the United States and its allies, the final document was not adopted. Russia, as the depositary of the NPT, will continue its efforts to ensure its integrity and credibility.
Andrei Belousov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and head of the Russian delegation to the Review Conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), said on May 5 that relations between nuclear-weapon States are currently in a depressing state. Belousov added that concerns about the aggravation of strategic risks and an increase in the level of nuclear danger are "well-founded."
