At least 37 people died due to the heat wave in southern India

At least 37 people have died from heat stroke in southern India amid intense heat. This was reported on May 23 by the Indian TV channel ETV Bharat.

"On Friday alone, 21 people died from heat stroke in various districts of Andhra Pradesh, and the largest number of such deaths occurred in Vijayawada - 10," the publication says.

The Hindu newspaper added that 16 more people had died in Telangana State. The authorities promised to pay compensation in the amount of about $4 thousand to the relatives of the victims.

The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that extreme heat may persist for the next three days. The authorities have set up distribution points for drinking water, buttermilk and rehydration solutions in public places, and have instructed emergency services to ensure that they are ready to provide assistance to victims of heat stroke.

Residents were asked, if possible, not to go outside from 11:00 to 16:00 unless absolutely necessary. Additional measures were also ordered to be taken to protect agricultural workers, construction workers and other people who work outdoors for a long time.

The Nilepost News portal reported on May 6 that three girls were killed by lightning in Kabale district in Uganda. The incident occurred in the evening during a heavy downpour. It was noted that the girls were hiding in the kitchen when the rain intensified.
