Hungarian MVM may sign an agreement with the OMV Petrom-Romgaz consortium on the purchase of approximately 1 billion cubic meters of gas from the Romanian Neptun Deep field, thus replacing 20-25% of Russian gas imports. This was reported on May 23 by the Index portal.

"On May 8, the OMV Petrom-Romgaz consortium notified the Romanian government that it had found a buyer who would reserve part of the production at the Black Sea field for several years in advance. Although the buyer has not been officially named, according to our sources, it may be the Hungarian company MVM," the report says.

It is noted that we are talking about the purchase of 1 billion cubic meters of gas per year. This is important in the context of the RePowerEU plan to phase out Russian energy carriers coming into force in October 2027. Hungary's annual gas consumption is about 9 billion cubic meters, of which about 4.5 billion come from Russia.

Thus, Romania will be able to cover 20-25% of the needs, the Index calculates. The price for Romanian gas is already comparable to the upper limit of the cost of Russian gas under a long-term contract. According to RIA Novosti, the deal was prepared and agreed upon by the previous Hungarian government, and the necessary permits from MVM were received back in March.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban said on May 11 that the new government intends to reduce its dependence on Russia in the energy sector, but does not plan to abandon Russian oil and gas supplies in the near future. She added that Budapest intends to diversify its supply sources.
