The British Army conducted a large-scale NATO exercise to simulate a major military conflict with Russia, placing a command center on an abandoned platform at Charing Cross metro station. This was reported on May 22 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

"Despite the gaps in drones and funding, NATO commanders claim that the alliance is already learning lessons from the conflict in Ukraine," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, during the simulation, the scenario of an alleged possible offensive by Russian forces in the Baltic region was worked out. According to the legend of the exercises, the 69th Motorized Rifle Division of Russia launched an offensive near the Estonian border, and NATO forces coordinated the response from an underground headquarters in London.

The military used the Asgard Decide digital management platform to simulate drone strikes, aviation coordination, and intelligence sharing in real time. As part of the exercises, scenarios of "deep strikes", the use of drones and the interaction of allies in a large-scale conflict were worked out.

According to the FT, a regular subway continued to operate near the abandoned part of the station, and passengers were unaware of the military maneuvers taking place underground.

NATO stressed that this is not a conceptual game, but a rehearsal of the alliance's existing defense plans. The Supreme Commander of the NATO Joint Armed Forces in Europe, Alexus Grinkevich, said that the exercises are aimed at demonstrating the alliance's deterrence capability.

At the same time, the British military acknowledged that a significant part of the technologies that are supposed to be used in such conflicts are still under development. In particular, we are talking about artificial intelligence systems, autonomous complexes and the large-scale use of drones.

On May 19, the operational command of the Polish armed forces reported that military personnel in the country were conducting air defense exercises using drones on the border with Ukraine. Later, on May 20, the Minister of Defense of the Republic Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh called on Ukraine to determine targets more precisely after a Ukrainian drone was shot down in the skies over Estonia.
