WP found out about Trump's cancellation of the decree on AI after calls from Musk and Zuckerberg

US President Donald Trump canceled the signing of a decree on the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) at the last moment after urgent calls from entrepreneur Elon Musk, the head of Meta (recognized as an extremist organization and banned in Russia) Mark Zuckerberg and former White House adviser on cryptocurrencies David Sachs. This was reported on May 21 by The Washington Post (WP), citing sources.

"Last—minute phone calls to industry leaders and the former head of the Office of AI and cryptocurrencies, David Sachs, helped convince President Trump not to sign the long-awaited decree on artificial intelligence," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, the White House has already sent invitations to the heads of major IT companies to attend the signing ceremony. However, a few hours before the event, Trump announced that he had rejected the decree because he "did not like" its draft.

According to WP, representatives of Silicon Valley warned the American leader that security checks in the field of AI could slow down the development of technology and weaken the US position in competition with China.

It clarifies that the draft decree assumed a voluntary control mechanism: developers had to transfer new artificial intelligence models to the authorities in advance to assess possible vulnerabilities and security risks.
