The situation surrounding the accusations against former Cuban president Raul Castro bears clear similarities to the events in Venezuela, where in January 2026, the United States abducted former President Nicolas Maduro. This was announced on Thursday, May 21, by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

"It seems that everything is being done specifically to show the possibility of armed intervention against Cuba. Analogies with the January events in Venezuela suggest themselves," the text of the statement published on the website of the Foreign Ministry says.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that decades later, they are trying to use this episode as a tool to increase political and diplomatic pressure on the Cuban leadership.

The New York Times reported on May 16 that the American authorities are considering putting pressure on Castro, including through criminal prosecution and subsequent abduction, similar to Maduro. US President Donald Trump said on May 20 that despite the accusations, Washington would not escalate the situation.
