Reuters has set a record for the number of ascents of Mount Everest in one day.
Mount Everest (Jomolungma) was conquered by 274 people from the Nepalese side on May 20, which became a record ascent in one day. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on May 21.
This record surpasses the previous maximum of 223 ascents from the Nepalese side, recorded on May 22, 2019.
"This is the largest number of climbers who have visited the peak in one day so far," said Rishi Bhandari, Secretary General of the Association of Expedition Operators of Nepal.
The mountain can be climbed from two sides — from Nepal and from Chinese Tibet. There were no climbers on the Tibetan side this year, as the Chinese authorities had not given anyone the appropriate permits.
In 2026, Nepal issued 494 permits to climb Mount Everest, each of which costs $15,000.
The Himalayan Times newspaper reported on May 17 that Nepalese mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa has updated the world and his own record by climbing Mount Everest for the 32nd time. Another record was set by climber Lhakpa Sherpa, who reached the summit for the 11th time, which was the best result among women.
