The driver of an airboat that overturned on Lake Baikal in Buryatia was placed under house arrest. This was reported on May 21 by a correspondent of Izvestia.

It is specified that the investigation requested the man's detention.

On May 20, a boatmaster and the owner of a boat that capsized on Lake Baikal were detained in Buryatia. It was noted that a man who did not have the appropriate rights was allowed to operate the boat. Both defendants are currently in custody.

A boat with 18 passengers on board capsized on Lake Baikal on May 19. Of these, 10 people were rescued, and five passengers died. A criminal case has been opened under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet the requirements for the safety of life and health of consumers, which negligently caused the death of more than two persons").

Lawyer Vadim Rozhdestvensky said on May 19 that those responsible for the deaths of tourists who capsized in a boat on Lake Baikal could face up to 10 years in prison or forced labor. The punishment will depend on the degree of guilt of each of the defendants.

The head of Buryatia, Alexey Tsydenov, in turn, noted that in the republic, after the deaths of five tourists on Lake Baikal, it is planned to tighten control over the tourism sector. The head of the region clarified that he had already instructed to provide the necessary assistance to the victims.
