The State Duma spoke about the work of Russia and China on the return of Iran and the United States to negotiations

Russia and China will work at all levels to bring the situation around the conflict in the Middle East back to the negotiating track and diplomacy. Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, told Izvestia on May 20.

"Russia and China systematically condemn and oppose military actions against Iran. And this position is reflected, among other things, in the joint declaration of Russia and China on the formation of a multipolar world and a new type of international relations signed during [Russian President] Vladimir Putin's visit to Beijing. At all levels, our countries will strive to return the situation to the negotiating track and diplomacy," the parliamentarian said.

He noted that the US Senate, as a result of a procedural vote, for the first time supported a resolution that actually orders the Washington administration to cease military operations against Iran. Several Republicans sided with the Democrats.

According to Slutsky, this partly shows the inter-party parliamentary anti-war attitude. The draft has yet to be approved by the House of Representatives, but at the finish it may be vetoed by American President Donald Trump.

"However, the results of the Senate vote mean that Trump's maneuvers regarding the continuation of the war against Iran are now narrowing. Especially in terms of allocating financial tranches," Slutsky said.

The day before, it was reported that the US Senate approved a bill that would limit Trump's military powers. Any new strikes on Iran will require congressional approval. The initiative was supported by 50 senators, 47 opposed. The previous seven attempts to adopt the resolution were unsuccessful. The bill was first put to a vote in 2025 after the US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
