Ryabkov announced the plans of the European Union to acquire nuclear status

The leadership of the European Union (EU) is thinking towards acquiring nuclear status. This was announced on May 20 by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

"Apparently, the leadership of the European Union is also thinking in the direction of acquiring nuclear status. Finland is working on the modalities of transit of nuclear weapons through its territory. Poland is making frivolous and destructive "overtures" to the NPT regime, allowing for the possibility of moving towards the possession of nuclear weapons," he said in an interview with TASS.

Ryabkov called these actions irresponsible behavior, which, according to him, also creates a sense of the need for other countries to possess nuclear weapons to ensure their own sovereignty. He stressed that this situation could affect not only the NPT, but also international security in general.

Andrei Belousov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and head of the Russian delegation to the Review Conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), noted on May 5 that relations between nuclear-weapon States are currently in a depressing state.
