NATO rejected the idea of creating a pan-European army

It is not possible to create a pan-European army. This was announced on May 19 by the head of the Military Committee of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.

"There's some kind of misunderstanding here. We already have a set of national armies… We cannot think about a European army," he said following a meeting of the chiefs of the general staffs of the bloc's countries, RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

It will be clarified that at the moment NATO does not even have a unified army.

A day earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the strategic risks of a "head-on clash" between NATO and Russia were increasing, and its consequences would be catastrophic. The Deputy Foreign Minister also noted that the narrative of the "growing Russian threat", recently spread in the European Union (EU), only fuels the situation.

On the same day, he added that Russia would take into account the strengthening of NATO's combined nuclear potential in military planning. According to Ryabkov, Russia is also considering France's actions as part of its "advanced nuclear deterrence" strategy. The Deputy Foreign Minister noted that France's expansion of the operational area of its nuclear forces into European countries would lead to increased attention from the Russian military responsible for strategic deterrence.
