- The Russian Foreign Ministry stated the impossibility of Kiev's attacks on nuclear facilities without the support of the West
Kiev's attacks on Russia's nuclear energy infrastructure would not have been possible without the support of Western countries. This was announced on May 18 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"Such provocations would have been impossible if not for the reckless support of Western curators, who inspire the current Ukrainian authorities with false hope of impunity and provoke them to new adventures," she said on the agency's website.
According to Zakharova, for several years the Ukrainian side has continued attacks on Russian nuclear power facilities, including the Zaporizhia NPP and Energodar. She also drew attention to the IAEA's response to attacks on nuclear infrastructure facilities and stated that there was no similar assessment after the incident near the Zaporizhia NPP on May 16.
On May 16, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) attacked the territory of the NPP with the help of drones. The drone crashed near the power units, but did not detonate. The head of Rosatom stressed that the purpose of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is to sow panic among the population and disrupt the usual way of peaceful life in Energodar.
He later added that both gas stations were disabled as a result of the strikes. Likhachev also said that a kamikaze drone of the Ukrainian troops hit a pipeline running along the engine rooms of the Zaporizhia NPP.
