In Ukraine, they proposed to increase fines for using the Russian language 10 times.
The Ukrainian authorities are considering the possibility of increasing fines for companies that continue to systematically use the Russian language. The newspaper Strana writes about this on May 19.ua" in the Telegram channel with reference to the Commissioner for the protection of the state language, Elena Ivanovskaya.
Russian Russian is currently subject to fines of up to 5.1 thousand hryvnias (8.2 thousand rubles) for the use of the Russian language, if the violation was recorded for the first time, and up to 12 thousand hryvnias (20 thousand rubles) for the repeated use of Russian.
According to the language Ombudsman, in 75% of cases, the first complaint about the use of the Russian language is taken into account, but some businesses are "willing to pay for the right to ignore the official language."
"Therefore, multiplying the fines by 10 is quite a working option for systematic violators. We must act according to the principle "if you do not respect the state language, you lose your profit, if you do not comply with the law, you lose the right to professional realization," Ivanovskaya stressed.
On May 9, the Ukrainian Language Ombudsman reported that the authorities were considering the creation of a coordinating council on language policy, whose task would be to counteract the spread of the Russian language in the country. According to her, the Russian language is still the main instrument of international communication.
A survey among citizens of the Ukrainian capital in the Kiev Digital application on May 4 showed that less than a third of Kiev residents communicate exclusively in Ukrainian. Only 32% of residents of the capital of Ukraine communicate in Ukrainian everywhere, 14% — in government offices, 13% — in shops and cafes, 11% — at work.
