Toyota Starlet hatchback got zero points in crash test
The Toyota Starlet compact hatchback, one of the most popular cars on the South African market, failed the Global NCAP crash test and received zero stars for protecting adult passengers. This was reported by Carscoops on May 19.
The Toyota Starlet is a redesigned version of the Suzuki Baleno model, which is manufactured in India and exported to South Africa. The differences between the two hatchbacks are in the design of the bumper group and the range of powertrains. As standard, the model is equipped with an electronic stabilization system (ESC) and two front airbags.
According to Global NCAP, both the leg area and the overall integrity of the body proved unstable and "unable to withstand further loads." It is noted that the side impact test on the barrier showed sad results: the lack of side airbags led to insufficient protection of the head, chest and abdomen. The results were so bad that Global NCAP decided not to conduct a side impact test on a pole.
Although the model did not receive a single point for adult protection, it scored 29.33 points for child protection. The head of the mannequin, which imitates the body of a three-year-old child, came into contact with the interior trim during a frontal collision and was hit in a side impact.
Global NCAP CEO Richard Woods called the Toyota Starlet crash test results shocking. Toyota South Africa explained that the car purchased for testing is an outdated modification and does not match the one currently available for purchase, which by default is equipped with an expanded set of airbags, including side airbags. In the future, Starlet's results may be reviewed after a new round of tests.
On May 14, sales of the new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ frame SUV, which was introduced at the end of last year, started in the Japanese market. The most compact model of the Land Cruiser range is offered in one package at a price of 4.5 million yen.
