Holy Trinity Day: the strict prohibitions of Pentecost, which not everyone knows about
Orthodox Christians celebrate Holy Trinity Day on May 31, 2026, one of the 12 main holidays in the church calendar. Over its centuries-old history, it has been overgrown with many folk traditions and superstitions: birch branches in temples, grass on the floor, a ban on bathing and trips to the cemetery. What does the church strictly forbid on Whitsunday?
Pentecost (this is the church name of the Trinity) is considered the birthday of the church, since it was on this day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and their path of preaching Christianity in the world began. The holiday always falls on a Sunday, and believers try to attend divine services and receive communion on this day. The service on Whitsunday is especially solemn — immediately after the liturgy, Great Vespers is served with the reading of kneeling prayers.
The holiday was officially established in 381 at the Second Ecumenical Council in Constantinople, where the dogma of the trinity of God was approved. In Russia, the Trinity began to be widely celebrated later in the 14th century, largely thanks to St. Sergius of Radonezh.
Over the centuries, many folk traditions, prohibitions and superstitions have developed around the holiday. However, as the church emphasizes, there are no strict restrictions on what can or cannot be done on this day.
— The main rule of church holidays is to be in church and participate in festive services. Everything else is applied to this one way or another," Archpriest Maxim Pervozvansky, a cleric of the Moscow Church of the Forty Sevastian Martyrs in Spasskaya Sloboda, told Izvestia.
Is it possible to go to the cemetery and commemorate the dead?
According to the priest, if you have the time and energy, you can go to the cemetery on the eve of Trinity, on Trinity Parents' Saturday. This is one of the two main parental Saturdays, when believers commemorate all Orthodox Christians who have died from time immemorial. However, on this day it is obligatory to visit the temple, not the cemetery.
— Imagine if you were in church on Friday evening, then on Saturday morning, then on Saturday evening. On Sunday morning, we [participated] in a long service with kneeling prayers, where else would you like to go to the cemetery? And why do you need to go to the cemetery on this day? — said Father Maxim.
It is much more natural, according to him, to spend time with loved ones at the festive table after the service.
Are the sacraments of marriage and baptism held on May 31?
Yes, you can be baptized on this day. Moreover, in the Ancient Church, Trinity was considered one of the special days designated for the baptism of catechumens, the name given to people who were preparing to receive the sacrament of Baptism and were studying the basics of the Christian faith, Father Maxim said. In addition to Holy Trinity Day, catechumens were baptized on Holy Saturday before Easter, as well as on Christmas and Epiphany Eve.
"But the transition to mass infant baptism has led to the fact that today this sacrament is performed according to need, and not on special days," he noted.
As for the wedding, according to the interlocutor of Izvestia, there is no ban on it on this day, but it is better to discuss this issue in advance with the priest of the temple where the sacrament is planned. The Pentecost service has a special duration, and believers tend to spend the day of the great feast together with the church, pushing personal events into the background, so some churches may suggest postponing the wedding to another day.
In the folk tradition, it was not customary to marry a Trinity, Natalia Fominykh, a religious scholar, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, professor at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, told Izvestia. At the same time, it was on Whitsunday, according to her, that matchmaking was often arranged. In Russia, it was believed that if a girl was "wooed" on this day, then the marriage would be rich, strong and happy.
Is it possible to swim on Holy Trinity Day?
According to popular belief, it was allegedly forbidden to swim on Holy Trinity Day.: It was believed that at this time, evil spirits "wake up" in reservoirs, and mermaids can drag a person to the bottom. Father Maxim, in a conversation with Izvestia, admitted that he had not heard of such a thing, but he was skeptical about this, as well as other "popular" prohibitions.
— Our people are wonderful and resourceful. He wants to give spiritual meaning to the most diverse aspects of life, and the easiest way to do this is to forbid something. In ancient religions, this was called "taboo." Any such prohibitions are a manifestation of primitive religious feeling. But, as a rule, it is important only for those who do not have more serious and deep religious feelings," the priest noted.
He stressed that in Christianity there are primarily moral prohibitions: you can not steal, kill, rob, have abortions, cheat on spouses. Prohibitions related to bathing, omens or household rituals, according to him, have no spiritual meaning and are only "the deepest superstitions."
Is it possible to clean and work in the garden on Pentecost?
In the folk tradition, on Holy Trinity Day, they tried to give up hard physical labor, cleaning and gardening.
— On this day, it is important to focus primarily on prayer and attending worship, as well as sharing the joy of the holiday with loved ones. It was believed that hard work would prevent a person from doing this," noted religious scholar Natalia Fominykh.
According to her, there was also a belief that it was forbidden to disturb the land on Whitsunday: to plant, dig beds or plant seedlings. The people believed that the plants planted on this day would not take root.
There are no such prohibitions in the church tradition. However, giving up hard physical work corresponds to the very meaning of the holiday — to devote this day to worship, prayer and communication with loved ones.
Is it possible to wash, go to the sauna, make up and get a haircut on a holiday?
According to Natalia Fominykh, in the folk tradition in Russia, it was believed that on Whitsunday you even need to pay attention to your appearance: put on new clothes, wash your hair, get your hair done or get a haircut.
"Since this holiday symbolizes renewal, a new life, it was believed that on this day you need to put yourself in order," she said.
In the church tradition, there are also no prohibitions on visiting the bathhouse, haircuts or self-care. The main thing is not to do this instead of prayer and participation in worship.
How to celebrate Trinity correctly for a believer in 2026
On the Day of the Holy Trinity, believers participate in the Divine Liturgy, immediately after which Great Vespers is celebrated with the reading of kneeling prayers — for the first time since Easter, at this moment, they kneel again in churches. In their prayers, Christians turn to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit— the three Persons of the one Holy Trinity. Temples are decorated with greenery on this day.
— The folk tradition, which is already very closely integrated into the church tradition, prescribes decorating the temple with birch branches and herbs. Greenery symbolizes new life and renewal. People come to the service with flowers, and during the service it is customary to stand with them," Natalia Fominykh said.
Archpriest Maxim Pervozvansky, in turn, noted that the floors in rural churches are often covered with freshly mown grass. Although recently many churches have abandoned this practice due to possible allergies among parishioners, limiting themselves to birch branches. On this day, the clergy dress in green robes, a color symbolizing renewal and life.
After the service, families traditionally gather at a festive table. According to Natalia Fomin, in Russia, pancakes, a loaf and egg dishes were usually prepared for Trinity. Not only relatives, but also friends were invited to dinner, as it was believed that generous food brought peace and prosperity to the house.
Such a tradition is supported in the church if the festive feast becomes a continuation of the common joy and family fellowship, and does not replace the holiday itself. As Father Maxim noted, in general, the church does not oppose folk customs if they can be integrated into a Christian context.
