Estonia's air defense shot down a drone on its own for the first time
For the first time, the Estonian Air Defense Forces shot down a drone on their own, presumably belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was announced on May 19 by the country's Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur.
"For the first time, we shot down a drone ourselves," he said.
Pevkur explained that the drone had entered Estonian airspace and was shot down by fighter jets patrolling Baltic airspace over Lake Vyrtsjarve. The head of the defense department indicated that, most likely, it was a Ukrainian drone that was redirected from its original target, Russia.
On the same day, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) announced that Ukraine was planning to launch unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from the Baltic states, demonstrating its "combat capability" to the West. According to the ministry, military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine's unmanned systems have already been sent to Latvia. The SVR pointed out that the Kiev regime aims by all means to demonstrate to its patrons in Europe the preservation of the "combat potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine" and their ability to damage the Russian economy.
Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said on May 18 that the republic's air defense forces had failed to detect a Ukrainian drone that had entered the country's airspace the day before. He added that although the country's armed forces have purchased new equipment and radars for detecting and combating drones, they have yet to be combined into a single system so that they work effectively.
