- Experts talked about ways to keep children interested in studying during the holidays.
Summer holidays should not turn into endless study or a complete loss of routine, as this can lead to stress before school and emotional overwork. On May 19, experts told Izvestia how to maintain a balance between rest, gadgets and child development during the holidays.
Preparation for the academic year
Elena Vasilyeva, a Master of psychology and a practicing psychologist, emphasizes that vacations are necessary for mental recovery, but the complete absence of a regime can make it difficult to return to school. Predictability and rituals are important for preschoolers, whereas it is better to negotiate rules with teenagers while maintaining their autonomy. Parents should not make summer as structured as the school year, but it is important to maintain a basic rhythm of sleep and nutrition.
The expert recommends starting the return to the school schedule two to three weeks before September. Gradually shifting the wake-up time and discussing future plans will help minimize stress. School should not be perceived by a child as a punishment for the summer that has ended.
"If a child lives all three months without sleep, exercise, movement, and clear boundaries, returning to school can really become stressful," Vasilyeva said.
Learning through hobbies
Diana Belan, PhD, lecturer at the RUDN University Department of Foreign Languages, believes that summer education should be lively and connected with reality. Instead of boring tasks, it is better to use game formats and project activities. If a child is passionate about hobbies, such as video editing or drawing comics, this already develops logic, speech and imagination, which will further help in school subjects.
According to the linguist, the fear of mistakes and grades at school often suppresses curiosity. In a project environment, children become more confident and learn teamwork. A complete rejection of intellectual workload is just as harmful as excessive study, so it is important to maintain a balance and encourage a natural interest in new things.
"As soon as the feeling of pressure disappears, natural curiosity turns on," Belan noted.
Digital hygiene and overwork
One of the problems of the summer period is the child's departure into the screen world. Vasilyeva notes that gadgets often replace children's lack of interesting things and space for communication. Instead of simple prohibitions, the expert advises to negotiate technology-free zones and sometimes give the child the opportunity to just get bored, since it is in boredom that fantasy is born.
Parents should also keep an eye out for signs of overwork that may result from an excess of camps and sections. Apathy, irritability, or headache complaints should alert you. In such cases, it is recommended to remove unnecessary plans and return quiet home time.
"In such a situation, one should not immediately accuse the child of laziness or ingratitude. Perhaps his nervous system is simply overloaded. The best thing that can be done is to remove unnecessary plans, return quiet days, sleep, walks without goals and regular home time," Vasilyeva said.
