Sales of black caviar in Russia decreased by 22% in January-April

In January-April 2026, sales of black caviar in Russia decreased by 22% in physical terms, and by 13% in monetary terms. This was reported on May 19 by the newspaper Kommersant, citing data from Evotor.

According to Dmitry Leonov, deputy chairman of the board of the Rusprodsoyuz association, consumers are increasingly preferring cheaper red caviar instead of black.

During the year, sales of red caviar increased by 73% in kilograms and by 17% in rubles. The Fish Union clarified that the most affordable option is pink salmon caviar. Its price fell by 14% over the year and in May amounted to 9.1 thousand rubles per kilogram.

The chairman of the Fish Union, Alexander Panin, said in December last year that the volume of caviar production in Russia in 2025 could reach 88 tons. He recalled that for many years there has been a ban on commercial fishing of sturgeon in the open. Black caviar supplied to the market on a legal basis can only come from fish specially grown in an artificial environment.
