- The media reported on the negotiations between the United States and Greenland in the field of natural resources
The United States, in negotiations with Denmark and the authorities of Greenland, wants to gain control over the island's foreign economic activity. This was reported on May 18 by the New York Times (NYT) newspaper, citing sources.
"The United States is discussing cooperation in the field of natural resources with Greenland. The island is rich in oil, uranium, rare earth metals and other important minerals, although most of them lie deep under the ice," the publication says.
According to the newspaper, Denmark and Greenland are opposed to Washington making decisions on investment agreements. They believe that this may violate the sovereignty of the island.
In addition, according to the NYT, the United States wants to change existing military cooperation agreements so that the US military can remain on the island indefinitely, even if Greenland gains independence.
The BBC reported on May 12 that the United States is regularly negotiating with Denmark to expand its military presence in Greenland, including the construction of new American bases. According to the interlocutors, American officials are seeking to open three new bases in the south of the island. The White House confirmed to the BBC that the administration is in high-level talks with Greenland and Denmark, but did not disclose details.
