Lithuania will create a minefield on the border with Russia
Lithuania intends to create a minefield on the border with Russia within the framework of the European Union (EU) Eastern Flank Watch project. This was announced on May 18 by Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas.
"The idea is to create deterrent forces along the border. And if deterrence doesn't work, then so do the means of defense. This includes a reliable line of defense with anti—tank weapons, mines to counter infantry movement, and so on," Robertas Kaunas said in an interview with Euractiv.
The Eastern Flank Watch project was announced in the fall of 2025 to counter perceived threats from Russia. The Minister stressed that, if necessary, deterrence should become a means of defense.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budris said on May 11 that it was necessary to return to the policy of pressure on Moscow.
Since December 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stressed that Russia does not intend to attack other states and fight with Europe. According to him, Russia is currently operating in Ukraine "surgically," but in the event of an attack by European countries on Russia, everything will be different.
